污水处理自动控制系统对PLC的性能提出了更高的要求，作为污水处理自动控制系统的核心控制器，其必须具备以下几大功能特点：首先本身必须稳定可靠，并具有预先处理数据和集中传输数据的能力，具有较高的故障保护能力；其次，控制分站本地控制器可以独立承担控制分区的基本控制任务，即使监控站或者监控中心因故障停止运行，相邻区域的控制器也能交换数据信息；再次，当某控制站的控制量出现变化时，可按预定方案和程序采取相应的算法，对相关区域的控制对象，比如泵或者加药系统等做出相应的调整。因此，它必须至少有如下功能模块，数据采集存储处理功能（实现集中和独立工作方式，尤其是在独立控制时能与相邻控制器实现数据交换）；通信功能、容错功能、自动诊断功能和本地操作功能（即能带触摸屏）。
